It looks like we are in for a long haul until a vaccine for the Coronavirus is available. This means that many of you will be working most of the time remotely, especially if there is a more deadly second wave on the horizon.  Let’s hope not and that through social distancing, we can manage this pandemic.  In the meantime, we need to start making plans for working at home while adjusting to this new normal.

As we form a new routine for working at home, we realize that we are sorely missing some gadgets to make the transition more pleasant and seamless.  The following are 8 wonderful inventions that my sister Carmen and I have found to be a blessing in disguise you may want to consider.   All of these items can be directly purchased from Amazon, of which a  link has been provided.  Here goes:

A morning stop to Starbucks or your favorite coffee shop on your way to the office is no longer a daily routine.  So how do you replace this lifeblood morning addiction?   While there are countless ways to make coffee, what is the right coffee maker that will offer you a perfect cup of coffee.  What are the right tools to buy in your quest to be a self-made barista?   While we can’t guarantee your first cup of coffee will be perfect, only practice will get you there (as well as buying good expensive coffee beans), we have the following suggestion for you:

We like the slim feature of this coffee maker that can be placed on any shelve or table closes to you to avoid trips to the kitchen.  Whatever the size of your kitchen, it will not take up that much counter space.  It will brew up to four cups of coffee, and if you need to leave in a hurry, it will accommodate your favorite travel mug.

For you latte lovers, we strongly recommend  Bean Envy Milk Frother Handheld Whip Foamer $13.87-  It will not disappoint offering a creamy, thick, rich froth just like your favorite barista does. The damn thing is even portable, and you get to choose from several colors.

Now, if you are a tea or hot chocolate drinker like I am, the quickest way to boil water is to own an IFeido Electric Kettle Fast Heating Tea Pot $28.99 that not only boils water at a good speed, but the glass jug and blue LED light looks very cool when entertaining guests.

For my full enjoyment, I like my beverages hot and not lukewarm.  I also like to take my time sipping and savoring my tea while working on my computer without having to nuke it once it cools down. The best solution to this problem is to get a  mug warmer. This gadget has come along way from its inception.  For super-nerdy tech-driven folks, there is the Ember, although pricey at $99.  A better and affordable choice is BESTINNKITS Smart Coffee Set Auto On/Off Gravity-induction Mug Office Warmer $39.99 Its slick-looking and it comes with its own stylish mug, its glass surface makes it easy to clean, and it is gravity control to turn on or off without you having to worry about possibly burning the house down.  Best part, your coffee or tea taste the same down to the last drop.

Now that we got our beverage addictions resolved, we now need to get to work and start our daily zooming.  Several hours of watching yourself and your colleagues on a screen can wear you out in addition to working all day on a monitor and, in some cases, with limited human interaction.  To counter the cerebral exhaustion that this brings, using TIJN Blue Light  Blocking  EyeGlasses $14.99 may just do the trick. Blue light blocking lens with yellow tint generally block 100% harmful UV rays that can relieve eye fatigue, especially when looking at a computer or watching TV all day and night.   TIJN offers a number of nice fashionable designs and colors to choose from; the Ink Blue and the Leopard are quite nice.  Best part, it spares me from having to wear makeup when I am on Zoom (priceless).

While we are on the subject of looking good on ZOOM,  one other practical item that has many different usages is the Selfie Ring Light with Cell Phone Holder Stand for Live Streaming /Zooming $35.00 Lighting is everything when you are on Zoom.  Besides having a nice background behind you, it’s essential to have good lighting in front of you to be able to look your best while zooming. This contraption is very flexible in positioning where you most need lighting, allowing you to use your smartphone to zoom while taking notes on your laptop.

Working at a desk for long hours is a killer on anyone’s back. There are some days when it can be insufferable.  Sometimes this limits you from doing things that have nothing to do with work like viewing videos, surfing the web, blogging, or watching a webinar.  My best solution to this has been the  PWR Laptop Table Stand Adjustable Riser $57.90, which I absolutely love.   Its adjustable legs offer a number of reclining positions, making it easy to use while lounging on the deck, sitting at a comfy sofa, or leaning on the bed with the right amount of pillows to relieve my back pain (sometimes with the added help of a heating pad).  Its only limitation is the amount of space between the legs depending on your body size.

One final product that honestly is just heavenly and surely the best way to start or end the day is the OliveTech Essential Oil Diffuser,  Black or Wood Grain $27.99, and Humidifier. The best part is the wonderful hypnotic mist that it gives off while enjoying a bit of mindfulness whether you are meditating, stretching, or doing yoga in the morning hours or as a way to relax at the end of the day with a glass of Malbec.  My favorite scents are lavender, peppermint, and lemongrass.   It also helps with relieving my sinuses.
These products may not work perfectly for everyone. What is most important is personalizing those gadgets that make your remote workspace survivable for you.
Next time, we won’t take ourselves so seriously and will share a list of things that make our new normal a bit more fun and creative.
